Dear One,

For 20 years, New Years Eve, for me, has always meant gearing up, getting ready, and steeling my nerves to play our biggest gig of the year. Then not drinking too TOO much, being granny paranoid and exceedingly careful driving home afterwards, ( as NYE = “Amateur Night”…)

This year, however, the NEW in New Years rings truer to me than any other time in I don’t know how many years. For example, I am booked well into 2015 with symphonies across the U.S, doing my own as well as classical programs. I am halfway done recording an album of re-imagined standards, and I’m at work on another play, AND book. Because of these highbrow endeavors, I can easily make it through almost an entire show without uttering a torrent of F-bombs….almost.

Seriously though, 2014 holds the promise of some stellar developments for myself, my loved ones and humanity in general. I feel more optimistic than I have in ages about what is coming.

We humans usually wish for things to change, especially when life doesn’t look the way we want it to. But, most of us are unwilling to extricate ourselves from unhealthy, dull or safe-old-same-old patterns. It can feel impossible to make a decisive move to change our circumstances. Why? Because that shit can be SCARY AND UNCOMFORTABLE. Lately, however, it seems many didn’t have to change things themselves, because the rug got ripped out, the floor gave way and they were forced into Scary and Uncomfortable’s waiting arms.

That’s me in a nutshell since 2009. But in these last few years, I have finally embraced Scary and Uncomfortable. And you know what? We DIG EACH OTHER now. Talk about getting thrown against a wall and rocked like a Hollywood damsel. Booya. The payoff for getting into bed, (….and backs of cars, and dark alleys) with Scary and Uncomfortable, has been major growth in my career, my art and my heart. Trust and breathe through it, he’s kinda unruly, that Scary and Uncomfortable but he loves the shit out of you. And wants you to change into something better.

Random scientific fact: We re-generate an entirely new body, on a cellular level, from our skin to our skeletons, every seven to ten years. Everything in the body can renew itself….except the cerebral cortex. The cells inside your self-renewing scull, are the same ones you were born with, and irreplaceable. But your brain is way more CHANGEABLE than the body. It is endlessly trainable, re-wireable and can be opened or closed at will. YOUR will.

Stick that in your pudding and poke it. Crazy awesome and out there, right??

Can’t wait to see you, Out There.
